Editing Music Video Blog

Editing the music video was a very tedious process. After dumping and importing the footage, I had to lay out the scenes in order. I had to go through several shots before choosing the right scenes. Once I did that, I downloaded the soundtrack and converted it to mp3. For one scene, I created a split screen for the knocking scene. I had to cut the upper scene because it lasted longer than the scene below. The song was difficult to align perfectly with the shots. I had to do a lot of cutting throughout the song. Even more so, I had to cut nearly each scene to go along with the song. Some scenes were even slowed down by adjusting the speed.

A major adjustment that needed to be done was the phone clips. Some of the shots were filmed on my phone. Due to this, we had to convert the phone video into and mp4 video. Then, once it was imported into Pinnacle studios, the videos were horizontal and not vertically framed. To try and fix this a bit, I had to edit the horizontal size from the effects editor and fix the cropping. However, the more horizontal the shot became, the more the graphics decreased in quality. Even more so, there was still a black border around the shot. The next major thing was the timing with the song and the actual clip itself. Most of the actions that played out did not align with the song. As a result, I had to slow down many shots by nearly 40%.

More scenes still need to be slowed to match with the song. Due to the complexity of this, the song does have to be cut in certain parts to catch up with the actions. If the scenes are too slowed down then they wouldn’t look good once played back. The last couple slides however don’t need an exact time frame for the song. This is mainly because the chorus follows along with the rest of the dancing regardless. The only thing left to edit is to fix some of the lighting. Due to the filming being shot over the course of different days and different hours of the day, the lighting is not all the same. This is why it was important to edit the lighting so it transitions smoothly. The last thing I made sure to do was to add some dissolving transitions for certain scenes. The end shot will feature the Sunshine title to tie the whole music video together.

Filming Process Blog-Music Video

Over the break, on Tuesday 26th after school, my group and I finished filming at the beach. The filming for that day took a total of an hour to complete for the final scenes. The following day, I reviewed all the footage. I bought an SD card reader to convert the footage from my phone to mp4. This editing and converting process took about two hours to ensure all phone footage was properly converted. Then, the music for the video was converted to mp3. The filming had a lot of individuals around which needed to be cut from the video. I made sure the faces of these people were not too visible in the video as well. While filming, we had to make sure that the water would not harm the video camera. The weather allowed the filming to go smoothly, with no rain interfering with our shooting.

When the group met up, the director, Steven, made sure to get the best lighting. I helped set up the angles and movements with each actor, including me. To make sure we followed the song, we re-shot many scenes to match the lyrics of the song. Some interruptions occurred like people walking by or birds flying in the shots. Even more so, I was concerned with how each shot would overlap with the next scene. For example, I had to review the last park scene of us jumping to match it to the beach scene. The reason for this is so that the clips transitioned smoothly from one scene to the other. This shot was taken a total of three times to make sure it aligned. When it came to editing, I had to cut the part where we landed at the park and cut the part where we jumped at the beach. By doing so, it’s all one fluid movement from park to beach.

As for editing, I had to review the previous shots saved into the video. I dumped more footage from my SD card into my folder on the desktop. Then, I imported the clips into pinnacle studios to begin editing. The newest editing style I used was applying split screen. The editing took a couple tries to make sure the actors were properly in frame and centered. Once that was completed, I had to adjust a few scenes as they were not correctly positioned in the video. I discussed with my group of adding some lyrics on certain scenes to draw away from the black screens on the side. As a result of this however, the scene looked a bit choppy and the graphics were not as clear as they could have been. However, with our schedule, there would have been no way to reshoot the scenes that were filmed on the phone. But overall, a lot of editing was completed, with just a few more shots to be added and edited for the final product.

Filming Progress Blog

I realized a lot during the whole filming process. During both the commercial and music video, many shots need to be taken to ensure everything is right. This includes the lighting, the audio, the angles and the overall movements/flow. When I started, I had no clue how I was going to do or how I could compete to make the best videos. As production began for the music video, I was beginning to feel my creativity sprout. I had many ideas on where to film and how to film it. The locations were finally confirmed, first the park and then a transition to the beach. What was interesting about these two locations is the jump cut that would happen from the park to the beach. The actors, myself and two other girls, would jump from the park and then land on the beach as a scene. This really allowed me to be more creative and outside the box on my filming.

The filming on Friday taught me a lot. If the lighting isn't right, make it right. We had to re-shoot several times until we could get the right shot. Extra people in the back kept disrupting the video as well which took more shots. Even more so, I had to call the park to confirm the location and to make sure it was okay to record. Making props was also very interesting and fun to do. I realized how much more work really goes into filming and editing as well. Even just editing a minute film can take hours. It's intensive work and concentration as well as dedication into making the videos. A lot of the editing needs to be redone to ensure that the clips aren't choppy or lagging.

When actually filming, the costumes and acting are both very crucial. I had to bring a whole new wardrobe to change into. I had to make sure the rest of the actors had their proper outfits on. Even with the props, when I found out we were missing a prop for a scene, we had to make-shift a new prop of flowers. By doing so, I realized how difficult and tedious it can be whilst actually filming. The camera angles needed to be re-done and shadows kept ruining some scenes as well. Planning and scheduling was very crucial throughout the filming process so the group knew when and what was being filmed for the day or if we were going to just edit. I truly grew and learned so much more about filming and editing through this. Each new shot needs to coordinate with the last shot which can be tricky if not aligned right. Now, I plan to progress even more with filming and editing so I can continue to get better. This music video will help as well to get me to understand fully how to edit and film so I can do even better for the next project.

Storyboard for Music Video

1. For the opening scene of the music video, it will be a closeup/extreme closeup of the sun and sky.

2. Then, it will be a tracking shot of me walking down the park with headphones on and my cellphone as apart of my props and costume. Along with this will be my actual clothing of a long black/floral one-piece. The sound will be low at first as I'm listening to it on my phone then high when I remove the headphones.

3. The following scene will be a pan shot of me meeting my friends to tell them of this song I just found.

4. A close up of the phone will be inserted and the song will begin to get louder.

5. For the next scene, me and the two friends will begin dancing in bright lighting, switching from medium shots to long shots to view the singing/dancing down the park.

6. Next, the scene following that will be the "knocking" scene. A split screen in editing  will show the male actor knocking on the door with flowers in hand as a prop, and my reaction shot on the other side waiting for his arrival.

7.  The next shot will be the "mailbox" scene. My friends and I will be waiting at the mailbox, getting ready with anticipation to open the mail.

8. A close up will show the letter and its contents as another prop.

9. The next shot is another reaction shot, which may turn into an action match to transition to the beach scene that follows.

10. On the next shot for the beach scene, it will be a track shot with a long to medium angle of me and the friends who then will continue dancing on the sand to the chorus of the song.

11. The final scene will look over the pier back into the sunset, zooming into the sun.

Planning Music Video

Location- The music video "Walking on Sunshine" will be filmed in a couple locations. The first place that the filming will be done at is Hagens Park in Fort Lauderdale. At this park, the opening scene will be presented of walking/dancing and singing along with the song. Then, the filming will be done at Fort Lauderdale Beach. The video will switch from the park to the beach during the song.

Health & Safety- The filming will be done in public and secured places. When the group takes an Uber, we will make sure to stay safe with the driver while on the road. During filming, the area will be checked for any hazardous object or people that could be around. When we're walking around to different locations, we'll make sure the area is safe and that the roads are clear of cars when crossing.

Props- The props include a cellphone which will be in the music video and headphones. These props will act as the source of where the music is coming from. Then, we'll have flowers in one scene for a part of the song. Then, a letter prop will be made for the mailbox scene.

Costumes- The costumes for the music video will be casual and floral. This will include accessories like bracelets, dress-up outfits like dresses, jumpsuits and blouses. The male actor will wear a button up shirt to be casual but clean looking. By doing so, the costume will represent an outdoor theme for the music video.

Schedule:

Music Video Research Blog

The commercial process was finished, including all filming and editing. My group and I edited over a three day period, non-consecutively and re-filmed over a two day period. The commercial came out good and I'm glad with the results. Once the soundtrack was found and added, it brought the whole commercial together. Now, we're moving onto a music video as the next project. This project will last a little longer, between a minute to a minute and 15 seconds. This project should be very exciting and definitely very creative.

The song we're doing is called Walking on Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves. This song is in the Pop-rock genre and was recorded in 1983. We chose this song because since my group members and I live in Florida, it seems fitting with the weather. We liked the up-beat tempo and the cool-sounding nature of the song. At first, we debated on doing a Taylor Swift song and we also debated on doing a rock-n-roll song by Joan Jett. Once we agreed on the song, we decided who was going to be the actors and who was going to be the director. Now, we can start more research and ideas on where and how we're going to film this music video.

The conventions for this music video starts off with the genre. Since this is Pop-rock, then the sound can always be heard to have up-beat, high tempo-themed music. This can include drums and electric guitars. The camera angles typically include close ups of artists faces. They can also include long shots of dancing/partying scenes. In the editing process, tints and filters are used to boost colors. Transitions are also included to switch from singer to instrument and back and forward. Sometimes they photo-shop artists to look "perfect".

For Mis-en-scene:

  1. Costumes: The costumes are usually bright-colored with fun designs. A microphone can also be apart of the costume, along with fashion accessories.
  2. Lights: The lights are bright and meant to showcase the actors appearance or the instruments.
  3. Acting: The acting is very light and meant to be fun/ adventurous. The actors can be seen jumping around or dancing.
  4. Makeup: The makeup can usually be very drawn out. The actors/singers can wear a lot of makeup that can bring to light a specific feature on them whether it be the lips or eyes.
  5.  Props: Props can include all the instruments used which can be in the background or physically held. Most times the prop is the microphone that's always on them, which can also be apart of costumes.
  6.  Setting: The setting typically switches from outside to inside. This can be the beach/park/skate park to the inside of a concert on a stage.

Editing the Commercial: Part II

Today while editing, I imported more footage into my media studies folder. I had to upload more clips from my USB to the folder first. When the clips finally uploaded onto Pinnacle studios, I started by clearing the previous movie. I set up the clips in order, starting with the wide shot and tilt of the bleachers. The following shot was of me running up the bleachers. For this part, I had to speed up the clip so it didn’t look as if it was lagging. For this specific scene, I had a voiceover done with one of my group members. This part was a little confusing as I had to detach the audio and then delete that sound. Then, I placed the voiceover clip on that scene on the Track 3 slide, but removed the visual. The speed was increased from 100% to 160% so that the scene didn’t start off with me waiting for the camera to roll.

Next, my group and I had to research some more sounds to put into the commercial. I converted a few songs to mp3, but the downloading kept failing. I was finally able to find a few sites that allowed me to download the music. I looked for more upbeat song tempos that translated well with the scenes. Some lighting adjustments had to be made for certain scenes and audio adjustments. All scenes had the audio removed so that the music can overlay smoothly. Too much diegetic sounds were in the background that didn’t go well with the overall commercial. I was able to review certain clips to figure out which ones were best suited, as I took many shots. A lot of the shots were not made into the final product because the camera angles did not look the best and the camera was too shaky. At first, the overview of the wide shot was made on the tripod but the tripod was too slanted. So instead, a tilt shot was taken of the bleachers which looked more smooth.

One of the last things I did was check the entire commercial in full. Some scenes still need to be edited with the lightning. Even more so, I need to add a Nike title in the beginning shot. I aim to have titles either just in the beginning or through out so the scenes correlate with what’s being said on text. More time may be needed to make the commercial longer which I can do by adding in more shots that I’ve taken. I was able to incorporate more close-ups and zoom-ins into my shots, such as the Nike shoes and Nike water bottle. The POV shot and the over the shoulder were also changed in speed, to be a little slower for depth. More editing needs to be done so I can cut out some parts of each scene. More lighting fixes need to be made and the right song still needs to be picked out. By then, the editing should be completed and ready to be exported.  Overall, editing went smoothly along with the dumping and importing of my files into Pinnacle studios.

Editing the Commercial

Due to some difficulties today in class, the editing was not possible. My teacher told the class that the computer are not functioning properly. Pinnacle studios was failing and shutting down on many computers, therefore editing was impossible. I had already began some editing, but this stress is adding to my frustration. Editing takes a lot of time and especially patience. None of group members are able to access pinnacle studios. Thankfully, some of my editing was still saved. To take extra precautions, I had to download all my shots onto my USB. Hopefully, the computers will be back up and running fairly soon. I will be able to really start my editing once the class receives new laptops.

When i tried getting into Pinnacle studios, it was extremely lagging. At some points, I had to make sure to keep re-saving my movie. If I hadn't done this then I could have lost a majority of my film. When I was able to download my shots onto my USB, it appeared that a lot of footage was missing. I had to log back into my laptop to recover the footage. Editing itself takes at least an hour, if not more and all students are very frustrated. I have yet to figure out which music to add in as well as cutting out some audio. I might need to re-shoot some more film if not all footage was recovered properly. The dumping and importing went decently but the computer still lagged. While importing and saving the movie, Pinnacle shut down.

After realizing all these concerns were shared with the class, the teacher was informed. Most of the computers will be switched out. By then, Pinnacle studios should be updated and working smoothly. This overall has put a halt on editing and hopefully time can be regained from this incident. Other classmates have yet to begin dumping and importing. The process to re-download my footage is taking some time, and I have to review the footage clips. Some of the audio came out too choppy as Pinnacle studios seemed to lag my footage. Logging into the computers became an issue as it took too long to get in. This is a real obstacle in my filming/editing process and taking precious time from productivity. By the coming days, everything should be back to normal and I can presume my regular schedule.

Filming Blog

As I filmed today, I had several roles and responsibilities in the process. The first thing I had to do was bring in my props and costume. The props I brought were a Nike water bottle and a football. As for my costume that I changed into, I wore my Nike running shoes and my Nike “just do it” athletic leggings. This completed my full costume for the commercial, heading out to the track to begin filming. As the main director, I had to plan out which bleachers I would run up on, which wide shot of the bleachers would be filmed and general placement of actors for each scene. I made sure to explain the scenes to each group member so it was clear what I wanted filmed exactly, such as the pan shot of the water bottle being thrown and the exact way the bottle should be held when I film the extreme close-up.  I also went through each scene on the camera to see if any re-takes should be shot before continuing on to the next scene. I took into account the lighting so the actors faces were visible and no weird castings were placed on them as well.  My scene was taken at least three times to get the tracking shot to align with my upward movements. I did the majority of filming, with the exclusion of filming myself.

For the set up, I had the tripod assembled with some help, and took a wide shot of the front of the bleachers. I re-shot this scene twice to get the angles right due to some difficulties in adjusting the camera. I also made sure the actors were wearing the right attire/costume. I placed one actor in a Nike sports tank top with a pair of Nike slide on shoes. I took the responsibility of making sure each scene was smooth and some what uniform in layout. I kept reviewing the shots I took to delete any shaky scenes that didn’t flow. I had to make sure the shots that were taken didn’t have any abstract objects around like miscellaneous items or other individuals not apart of scenes.  While filming the P.O.V shot, I had to stand atop one of the bleacher steps to get a better angle that appeared more of the person as the shot implies. For the over the shoulder shot, I made a good enough distance that would not get me in the footballs way. As I filmed the two shot, I had to place the actors in a closer proximity to shoot the scene of a smooth transition of the football being thrown and received.  By doing so, I can visually see the flow of movements made without being too different from the two other scenes.

When filming was wrapped up, I made sure to put away the tripod with some help as well as the camera. I was responsible for carrying back all props used in the film. Once I was out of costume and back to class to begin dumping, I removed the SD card and placed it into the SD card reader. I signed out the SD card reader as well as responsible for signing out all equipment used during filming. I also made sure to sign out my filming ID pass so that are materials were returned properly. I set up the folder to place all shots taken that would then be transferred into Pinnacle Studios. I helped in importing the file into Pinnacle studios so that all scenes were on the app and accessible to be edited. I made sure the Pinnacle studios was set on “New movie” to clear any existing content that was already placed on there. When the importing was completed I made sure to safely remove the SD card. I had to make sure the SD card was correctly signed off and returned accordingly.

Storyboard, Camera Angles, and Movements Blog

With a Nike commercial, movements are usually fast paced to catch the angles of:

  • Throwing a football
  • Running
In this commercial, the opening scene is a Wide Shot of the track and bleachers with the editing of a title NIKE displayed. Along with this, a soundtrack will be added within the editing process.

Next scene, a Tracking shot of me running up the bleachers as a close-up.

Next, a POV shot of a football being thrown to a person at the end of the track.

Over-the-shoulder shot is next of the person on the other end catching the football.

Next, a Two-shot of the football being thrown to each-other.

Next, a Pan shot will be taken of a water-bottle being thrown to someone sitting down, which will then switch to an extreme close-up of the waterbottle being held and showing the NIKE symbol/emblem.

This will be the end scene.

Editing Lesson Blog

We learned about the basics as for the camera type, a Canon and the tripod that aids in filming. The tripod can do tilt and pan shots. As for editing, there is a lot that goes into this detailed process. Once your logged into the computer, it is crucial to right click on the desktop and create a folder. This folder will hold all pictures and shots taken from the camera. To dump all footage into this folder, the SD card will be placed into an SD card reader that will be connected to the computer. The folder will have a DCIM tab where all footage from the SD card will be held. The clips each have a date and time from what the camera date and time is set to, so each should be checked on the camera beforehand. If footage cannot be found in the DCIM tab, then click the private ta, go to ADCHD and look for the word "stream". Here, the footage from your camera should be found, but resort to this option as second after checking the DCIM tab first.

To make sure are clips are in the folder, highlight them all to securely place them in. Once this is completed the SD card can safely be removed. This process is called DUMPING, taking the cameras SD card into the computer. Once that is done, Pinnacle studios is the where the editing takes place and where the IMPORTING begins. Importing is taking footage from folder/computer desktop straight to Pinnacle. Click on import once entering Pinnacle, click desktop and then the plus sign, find folder, footage pops up and click on all footage you want imported. Your raw footage will be seen on the top of the screen and where you can begin dragging those shots onto AD Track 2 for film. Ad Track 1 is reserved for titling and AD Track 3 is for music. A clip can be cut so the scene moves smoothly, which can be found in the center of the screen labeled "cut". Make sure the exact part of the clip is selected before splitting the clip, but in any case, the redo button can reverse any mistake,

For the scenes, right-clicking will allow you to slow, speed or reverse a scene. On opening the effects editor, you can change certain parts of a scene such as: the time of day by darkening or brightening scenes, add cool effects like flames or just enhance color overall. Transitions as well can be included like fade in, fade out, iris in and iris out. If doing a voice over, make sure to get sound waves out of a clip but do not mute the entire clip as it will remove ALL sounds. Just right click to detach the audio and click on the audio once detached and delete. To do the voice over, film the person speaking, add the clip into the editing but in this case just detach the film and keep the audio. For titling, click the "T" letter, begin typing, press "OK" and your option of motion, but make sure to move it around so it is not blocking a person or object. Once this is completed, save your movie and save it within your folder. EXPORT when you have rendered your film in full by clicking MPEG 4 in SD best quality. Start the export process, saving it under what the teacher says to title it as; this completes your editing process.

    Research:Commercial Conventions and Codes

My group is doing a NIKE commercial. In these commercials, the audience usually sees people taking part in physical activities (running, sports, etc).

    •  They wear costumes such as their tennis shoes, basketball shoes, shorts, tights, sports bras, and loose-fitted shirts.
    •  Props include NIKE footballs, water bottles, jump ropes, basketballs, towels and so on.
    • Their appearance is usually fit, and sweaty, with added glisten to their skin as their doing their activities.
    • The score through the commercials are fast-paced sounds that are meant to make the audience feel motivated and empowered to work out and be active.

    1. Conventions and Codes in NIKE commercials include the symbolic swoosh, added with a "JUST DO IT" slogan. This slogan sparks the media to just go for it, accomplish goals and reach new heights.
    2. In the commercial the props are ALWAYS angled to show the NIKE symbol to let the audience know it is a NIKE commercial- even without stating the name. The symbol has become universal so they know.
    3. The commercial can sometimes include ethos- showing famous athletes, actors and even signers as a way to show that everyone, even the richest, sport NIKE wear.

    Introductory

Hi, my name is Carla. I was born in the South of France and I'm Jewish. My favorite subjects include reading and writing, as well as science; preferably chemistry. The type of person I am is very ambitious and easy going. I love being hands-on and find ways to contribute myself to the world. This could be a number of things including: feeding the homeless, helping disabled children, doing beach clean-ups and animal care. I truly find it rewarding in itself to be apart of something, whatever it may be, for a better cause to society.

Currently, I'm taking AICE media, AICE environmental and AICE business. I also take trig, English 4 honors, Culinary 3 honors and Government honors. So far, I'm enjoying all my classes, but especially my media and business class. As I'm getting into media, I often catch myself making mental notes about the movies/shows I'm watching. In my business class, I find it so interesting how open I'm getting to the world stocks and trading and of course, money. Those two classes are definitely in my top tier for favorite subjects right now.

As for my dislikes, the list is not too long. I'm pretty open to new things and more often than not, I enjoy doing whatever that new activity may be. But I think something I really dislike is procrastination. For me, I need to get on an assignment the moment it's due-and not sloppy work either. I've always had good work ethic, therefore it would be hard to break me out of that cycle, regardless if I'm a senior. Other than that, some foods I dislike would be mint chocolate chip ice-cream (gross) and asparagus (I tried...did not sit well with me.) But overall, this is me in brief;I'm  beautiful, funny and humble. (ha ha).
